M.Tech Robotics and Automation

M.Tech Robotics and Automation has a promising career for the next 10 years. The scope is widening with more and more industries moving towards automated services. Robotics Engineering deals with the design of modern, highly functional and innovative robotic systems. It also deals with their operations and applications in varied industries. It may lead to potential career opportunities in manufacturing, research and engineering, space exploration and a variety of other areas.

M.Tech Robotics and Automation – Future

Robotics is influencing every aspect of modem life. Surgery robots for example, are being used to assist surgery. Industries have also started using robots to allow them to manufacture more units of products with impeccable quality within the given timeframe. As space and related research continues to become more and more important for each country, robots are being included in things such as surveying the solar system and engaging in exploratory missions. All these paves the way for the M.Tech Robotics and Automation graduates to secure a highly paid job.

Many of the predictions we’ve seen lately, regarding jobs of the future, assume that humans will even have jobs once the robots take over. That’s a possibility, but soon, there will still be jobs for the taking – that it primarily to manage the robots. Robots are likely to replace humans in performing monotonous and hazardous activities which humans prefer not to do. or are unable to do.

Anything that can be automated, will continue to get automated. Any task can be automated if the human intervention is not essential to perform the task. Robots will emerge in the lives of every person in this planet, at more levels than we ever dreamt possible in the coming decades.

Indian automation industry is expected to grow at 20 to 25 percent every year. Cost reduction in every industry is possible only through automation. Industries like chemical, manufacturing etc. are expected to grow with the automation of processes involved in the products and services. When compared with manual labour, robotic and automated processes gives more accuracy and productivity.  Due to these advantages, installation of factory automation solutions in various factories is projected to increase in the coming years.

Though Automation and Robotics may remove eight hundred million jobs globally in the next 20 years. A different set of jobs of interdisciplinary branches will emerge as a result of this explosive growth.

Career after M.Tech Robotics and Automation

Many reports estimate that several lakhs of jobs will be lost to automation by 2020 and that number will keep growing as the industries move towards efficiency and productivity. Most hit jobs would be the white blue collar jobs of those office workers and executives.  It includes both manufacturing, chemists, etc. On the other hand, an abundance of robots will also create a demand for engineers who can manage, create, design robots and so also fix robots. These robotic engineers would also have to program robots and break them too if they go out of control. Graduates pursuing M.Tech Robotics and Automation are likely to study things like electronics, control systems. mechanical. electrical. artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things and related software engineering.

World is about to see the problems that were not seen before. Every industry and domains would need problem solving approach to sustain. Problem solving can take place only if the M.Tech Robotics and Automation students will have to think outside the box.  You have to see the big picture without losing your eye for detail and rearrange things to find a solution. Luckily, this skill is highly developable and simply takes practice.

Critical decision making would still remain with the human beings because of the trust factor, even if technology may be able to automate many of the jobs that currently exist. Robotics and Automation would help to analyse various situations considering multiple solutions and making decisions in a jiffy following logic and reasoning

Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) jobs are trending currently As technology progresses. you’ll need to have more advanced STEAM skills to keep up with the pace.

M.Tech Robotics and Automation graduates need to develop a certain set of qualities which will be hard to replace to survive such fierce competition from the robots. The more creative you are, the less likely you are to lose your job to a robot! While robots may be better than you at calculating and diagnosing problems. they are not very good at creating original ideas. thinking outside the box and innovating. or smart enough to replicate itself without human intervention.

We will figure out a way to convert this threat into a opportunity sooner or later. We always have the human instinct to survive has always been our most powerful drive.

After a successful completion of the course, the student will be able to describe how the industrial robot systems are used, constructed and operated and explain the structure and function of the robot equipment in detail, including the drivers, mechanisms and sensors. He will also be able to describe other parts of automated production methods, including process control. product flow machine safety and personal safety and describe computer-based manufacturing tools and communications in an industrial robotics network. They will be equipped to identify fundamental issues within sustainable industrial development from an automation perspective and be able to exemplify the consequences of these. implement and present a basic automation task with an industrial robot. including pilot study, online and offline programming and evaluation of the results, based on a given specification.

M.Tech Robotics and Automation  – Various Types of Robots

  • Cartesian robots are robots that can do three translations using linear slides.
  • Scara robots are robots that can do three translations plus a rotation around a vertical axis.
  • Six axis robots are robots that can fully position their tool in a given position (3 translations) and orientation (3 orientations)
  • Redundant robots can also fully position their tool in a given position. But while 6-axis robots can only have one posture for one given tool position, redundant robots can accommodate a given tool position under different postures. This is just like the human arm that can hold a fixed handle while moving the shoulder and elbow joints.
  • Dual-arm robots are composed of two arms that can work together on a given work piece.

M.Tech Robotics and Automation Research Areas

  • Analysis, synthesis and motion planning of robots and mechanisms
  • Biped Locomotion: Design and experimentation of optimal energy efficient biped robots with compliance at foot, knee joints, etc.
  • Exoskeleton: Human motion based design and development of a three finger 10 DOF exoskeleton robot hand for rehabilitation of stroke patients.
  • Intelligent control systems: Design, development and path planning of 14 DOF Lunar rover on 3D terrain. Kinematics and redundancy resolution for performing tasks with arm on rover.
  • Micro Sensors and Actuators: Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) based grippers and mechanisms for robotic micro assembly.
  • Smart compliant mechanisms
